Cancel Car Insurance in Germany
The cancellation period for the car insurance policy in Germany is one month.
In Germany, car insurance is mainly contracted until the end of the calendar year, but it is automatically extended on the first day of the following year. So, your new vehicle insurance (auto insurance) policy becomes valid on the first day of the new year. If you do not want the car insurance policy to be automatically extended, you must cancel it. In doing so, take care that the notice period is one month. This means if the auto insurance policy lasts until the last day of December, the date by which the insurance company needs to receive your written cancellation of vehicle insurance is November 30, which is precisely one month before the insurance expires.
The date of receipt of the cancellation by the insurer is important, not the date of sending. If the insurer does not receive the notice of termination of the insurance policy in time, the current contract is automatically extended for another year.
In addition to the regular termination, you have the right to extraordinary terminate your car insurance policy in case of a premium increase, complaint, or change of vehicle.
If your car insurance ends during the year, the rule with a notice period of 1 month still applies. For example, if the contract expires on the 31. of May, your insurer must receive the cancellation of the car insurance policy no later than the 30. of April.
Switch Car Insurance in Germany
Changing car insurance in Germany is easy. It is necessary to comply with the notice period of 1 month. If the auto insurance policy lasts until the end of the calendar year, your auto insurer must receive a written notice of cancellation by post or fax on the 30. November.
If the vehicle insurance policy is canceled on time, it ceases to be valid on the 31. of December at 11:59 p.m. In the meantime, it is necessary to find and choose a new car insurance policy that will start on the 1. January at 00:00 next year.
Insurers often offer more favorable car insurance after the cancellation of insurance is requested.

- Driving license
- Vehicle license
- Percentage relief for insurance
- Mileage of the vehicle
- Current car insurance contract number
Car Insurances: Liability, Partially Comprehensive and Fully Comprehensive
Your auto liability insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht) pays out the consequential damage when your vehicle damages other cars or people.
Partial (Teilkasko) or fully comprehensive insurance (Vollkasko) is necessary if you want to be covered when your car is damaged. These types of insurance are voluntary. Full comprehensive insurance is recommended only for new cars and expensive used cars. For other vehicles, it is more profitable to have partial comprehensive insurance.
